If there was oil in Zimbabwe, what's going on there NOW may not be happening.
You can't go back in the past, change one aspect of a complex problem, and expect everything else to remain the same in the future.

if Sudan is any indicator, the Chinese would contract to buy the oil and then sell the Mugabe government all the weapons it needs to clear the land of 'troublemakers' who oppose the development.
After which, they'll veto any UN action and let you gawp like a fish out of water while they laugh.
