I know almost nothing about computer hardware. Currently my laptop has 504 MB of RAM and I have another 504 MB card left over. If I combine them both (the laptop has 2 slots), would it increase the efficiency of the computer?

A RAM upgrade will definitely help your computer performance, but there is no guarantee that the extra RAM chip that you have is compatible. Go to Crucial.com and run a scan.

Yes, it will improve overall system performance. More so if your laptop is capable of operating memory in dual channel mode. Your integrated graphics can also share more from system RAM.
