I live in Canada. WHat type of computer should I get? Where should I buy it? My oldest child is in Grade 3, so he doesn't need it for much yet. We mostly use it for fun searches and email. WHat is this going to cost me???? I am cheap. Lol.

May I suggest that you ask for an AMD 64 bit or x86 chip, Asus Motherboard, 1 GB RAM, HDD configured barebones computer.

This will be the state-of-the-art cheap comp. There are those who'll assemble the comp to your requirements.

The Asus mobo comes with AGP and Audio cards and has onboard ethernet card, too for your LAN connection. This means it's got all that you need already.

Now, ask the assembler to load Sun Solaris 10 OS. It's free and if you ask SUN, they'll even send you a DVD for free.

The reason why I'm suggesting that you have this is that Solaris can run both Windows and Linux applications. Besides it diagnoses and repairs itself and is the most rock solid of all OS in the world.

Download and install Open Office which will open all MS Office files and is free of cost.

If you'd like to do Web Designing, then download and install NVu, which is also free of cost.

You can also get the Serif Free Software Suite.

Download and install Avast Anti-Virus, if you wish, which is also free of cost, Home Users' version.

Now, you'll find that you have all the state of the art technologies in place with all the applications you need, at a fraction of the cost of a standard system which is branded and uses Windows and MS Office.

If you like DIY, you can even make your own computer and that'll save you the labor costs involved in assembly which is a couple of hundred dollars.

Believe me when I say this, it doesn't take a genius to assemble a computer and all you need is a good screwdriver set.

The Tutorials I've given you are very easy to follow and DIY is fun.

If things are costly where you are, see if you can save with online buying and calculate the shiiping etc. You get lots of discounted offers online, but do be careful of whom you deal with.

Please use the links given below to find these things that you'll need.

All the best.

Do you need a new one? Good used that are not too far behind are available at places like Factory Direct. From under $600 (tax included) you have monitor and system box etc. New should be a little more and many come with Windows (both used and new).

For inexpensive software goto places that have software clearouts. Lots of educational programs for under $20.

If you live in the Toronto/Mississauga area you can easily do this. Shop around.

For all you others remember that in canada things are more expensive than in the US.

Watch your local newspaper for ads and flyers. Check your local computer stores like Future Shop, The Source, Staples, etc. Ask your relatives if they have an old computer that you could use for now. Post a Want Ad at the grocery store.

By the sounds of it, you don't need the "latest and greatest", so buy the best PC that you can afford. Many companies offer decent systems that include a monitor, speakers and often a printer for under $700 CAD.

TIP: Buy brand names like Dell, Acer, CompaQ, HP, etc. with a good warranty, you'll be glad you did.
