Customer: Could I have a yard of 2 x 2 please?
Timber Merchant: I'm not allowed to sell you 2 x 2. We have to use metric now. It will have to be 5.08 x 5.08. I can't sell you a yard, either. It will have to be a metre.
Customer: Oh no! How much is that going to cost me?
Timber Merchant: Eleven and three a foot.

So you see, 2.x 2 is no longer legal.
