That's the funny thing about common sense - it's not that common!
I think it's about using different parts of your brain. Intellect uses logic & facts & is analytical. Common sense people go by intuition & gut feeling. I think it's rare to have both.

Now I know common sense is not anybodys cup of tea lol it comes naturally...studying something and getting good grades anyone determined can do , one who is hardworking can do...but doing the same in a smart way in quite a small amount of time is called smartness. For eg. we remember telephone numbers but there are some who literally byheart it by chanting the numbers till their heads wud burts off and still at the end they'd nto remember lol but the same thing a smart person wud do is try finding a convenient way of memorising the number without putting in any effort it;s just the tactic which says use ur brain. It's not easy believe me common sense is not necessarily a major factor gifted to studious brilliant students lol it;s infact a gift for the less studious coz they also have to go on ahead in life so they have a special gift.
Common sense comes out of observation, alertness and thinking a little bit before doing the job whereas a studious or brilliant bookworm will just do so by going thru the material given to them or provided to them they never use their brains beyond that coz they know thats wat is going to come. For eg.
there are professors teaching at the universities they just byheart wat they are supposed to teach for the day providing the students exactly the same examples the book lists them but a professor who has common sense will try giving some other examples which are not listed in the books but some day to day life experiences or observations.
Now u use a scalpel why don't u let fear come in ur way and try to find a way to handle it in such a way that ur hand will be safe and u;d do the needful job too. let the fear overpower u and ur lost totally. instead try to see how u can change the way u hold the scalpel...figure out where the sharpness is and where u can safely hold it...try practicing ur hold on it before using it so that u'd get to know how it truly feels. the comfort level when u hold the scalpel the right way will initself give u ur reply.

I was like that when I was younger, but when I went away to college and was put in a situation where I HAD to use common sense, I definitely had more than I thought I did. I think that in smarter people it just develops at a later stage? That's the best rationale I can give. But don't worry, you'll get some, especially if you are smart. You'll get to the point where all of the book learning isn't as important, but getting a job, meeting new people, providing for yourself takes priority and you'll get good at all of that stuff too.

This is a greatly exaggerated generalization about people.
Being smart may be a natural trait for some people, but whatever the degree of intelligence, it is reinforced and sharpened by being tested against various types of challenges (i.e., try it and you will learn).
"Common sense" is developed through experience. If experience is liimited (e.g., if a young person focuses on school work, or is sheltered because parents or others make decisions for him/her) they will not develop what peoplle commonly call "common sense" until they have enough experience in making ordinary day to day decisions where a wider range of challenges provide possibiliities to test yourself and learn.
A real question is whether people develop a capability to self-correct their mistakes and learn from experience, or keep repeating the same mistakes of judgment over and over again.

People who have learned a lot have two tendencies, among others. One is that they tend to out-think themselves and miss the obvious because they assume everything is complicated. And the other tendency is to think of too many things at once. They are, therefore, less attentive to the here and now and live more inside their own heads, which they find more interesting than the immediate here and now. To increase your "common sense" try to focus your attention to the here and now and people's immediate concerns when necessary. You aklso have to learn when to recognize it is necessary. Using meditation and mindfulness techniques will help. Good luck.

It sounds like you are impulsive and inattentive. perhaps doing things without thinking. You may have ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder). It is not a good idea to self diagnose, however, you might consider talking to your school psychologist about these situations you mentioned. There are treatments for ADD.

i have to believe it is because the mind can only do so much...you are at an intellectual state where you know things most common people dont...seems that you learn easy...so those day to day boring things are not important to your mind...therefore you make stupid mistakes...at least you don't make those really huge mistakes...be grateful for what you have and know that it could be so much worse
