I'm guilty of listening to my iPod when I'm walking down the street but I take it off when I get on the train or to a shop. I never blare out loud music because I'm partial to Jazz and it's best appreciated at normal volume.
I smile and say good morning to strangers. It takes them by surprise but a lot of people smile back.
Just three days ago, I had had a really bad day at work and was walking home but didn't realise I had a frown on my face. A teenager, he couldn't have been more than 16, walked up to me and said "Smile, it's not as bad as you think!". I couldn't believe it! That cheered me up immediately and I thanked him for it.
Keep sharing your smile. It cost nothing to give and could mean a lot ot a stranger :)

No, you're not the only sociable person in the world, although it can certainly seem that way, can't it?
I don't blare out loud music (even though I feel my musical preference is tasteful--I do realize that not everyone in the world appreciates operatic arias) and I smile at everyone. :-)
As to wearing an i-pod, it depends on what I'm doing and why I'm out. If I'm out for a walk, yes, I'll be wearing one. If I'm on the bus, yeah, still wearing one. However, if someone doesn't realize I'm wearing one and starts talking to me, I will stop the music and talk to them. I can listen to music any old time; interacting with a fellow human being is much more interesting and important. Thing is, most people just don't want to talk, like you must have noticed. It's really a shame.

Well... Lately I plug...
Although I like to talk to people on street very much, specially in markets or piazzas.
Problem is that I have not enough time to listen all music I want while I am home or at work...
I know it helps to separate from others.
I understand your advice, so I will continue communication.
P.S. I like your avatar very much. It is the most beautiful one
I have ever seen!

yeah i find that too! i have to travel an hour to college every morning, instead of friends talking they just automatically put in their ear phones and blear their music so the whole bus can hear!! not just one person this is like almost everyone!
it just annoys me soooo much, they're just so antisocial!
i love music just as much as anyone but when you're with friends or in an environment where people may want to talk to u there's no need to constantly have your earphones in.
i hope this craze wears down!

i do all them things. what ever happened to walking an old lady across the street. i still offer but now if people do nice things then they expect something in reurn alot of the times. i think this country and a lot of others have turned into nasty people and are iggnorant to the world around them. these things make all the difference. i dont blame some people though becuse you see so much bad stuff in the news it just puts people and they have the attitude "why should i do it noone does it for me."

No you are not. I hate the i-pod and I reckon that there will be an increase in noise induced hearing loss in a couple of years time.

I often talk to others and I don't plug in. I do admit that I often bury my nose in a book when I want to be left alone.
