Nails look dirty when grown too long, period. That is because they are designed by mother nature that way, dead cells, hard, may be useful for scratching or digging.
In the evolutionary scale, they were a man's built in tools, foraging for food, etc.
Cut them up to a millimeter on the sides and 2 cms in the middle. Clean with a soapy solution or a quick 10 minute soak in water with a little soap or non phosphate detergent. Use a nail file to remove stains from everyday chores. Buff and polish with emery boards.
Clean nails separate a well groomed human from the rest of his phyla (chordata). LOL.

If you use a small brush to scrub your nails out every morning then that will keep then clean. Also if you forget maybe when you have the time then you can paint them and clean them often. This worked for my Grandmother who put fake nails on her nails. Thank You Kelsey Q.

Just make sure you wash your hands after doing stuff even if it doesn't look like it's going to be messy work. Keep an orange stick in your bag or pocket, as well as being used for tidying cuticles they make useful tools for scraping dirt out drom under fingernails. If you want, get a french manicure or do it youself. Apart from making your nails tips look whiter it'll hide the dirt.

I play Guitar, so my nails on the left hand are short. But... on the other hand (pun intended), my right hand nails are long. I keep a white coat of polish (not clear)on them, and a black on the thumb. In order to keep mine clean, i just clean them out with a paperclip, and wash under them with soap and water. Easy.

Scrape your nails across a bar of soap, the soap gets under the nails and stays there, and the dirt cant get in .lol. May sound funny but works a treat when youre gardening!

Why grow nails so really long? It is unnatural and look dirty. Easy to keep them clean and hygienic when clipped every couple of weeks or atleast every month.

Clear polish underneath the nail? Weekly manicures? Washing hands well throughout the day?

Use gloves for 'diry' tasks, and other than that, the nails clean easily normally and can be cleaned up quickly with 'normal' hygiene of washing frequently as should be required anyhow after and before different tasks...
