u can connect 2 pc with crossover cable.
but 2 machines have to include ethernet card
to make a crossover cable u need cat5e cable 2 jacks.
cat5e cable inculude 8 colour cables
first jack and machine - second jack and machine
orange white - green white
orange - green
green white - orange white
blue -blue
blue white - blue white
green - orange
brown white - brown white
brown - brown
by the way if the distance between 2 computer is more than 100metres you need to buy switch or router.because if distance more than 100metres the speed of connection will be so slow.

You will need a router for one. Then its a matter of running the xp network wizard (start, control panel, network connections and then Click the Create a home/small office network) on both pcs with the exact same settings. Should take care of it.

Connect the PC's together using a standard (Cross over cable may be required) CAT-5 cable and enable "file sharing" on one of the PC's.
In My Network Places on the second PC, you should see the 1st PC's shared folder. Drag & Drop.
