You should login to the NetGear router. The default address is http://192.168.0.1 once on the routers configuration pages you will find wireless and wireless security.

First change the SSID from netgrear to something you can recognize. Then go to the security page and enable WAP/TKIP it will ask for a "pass pharse / password" just make one up and enter it. (visit the netgear website http://netgear.com ) they have detailed instructions for this. Once that is done save the settings. That will cause the router to restart.

On your laptop/pc your wireless adapter will then show your new SSID.. just click on it to connect enter the same passphrase or password that you put in the router.. you should then connect and be protected.

Hi, the best security you can do in my opinion is called mac filtering. This is were only YOUR hardware can access your router.

First thing to do is change your user password from password.

Open up internet explorer and type in 192.168.0.1 which is the default address for your router.

Click on left hand side were it says set password. Change the password remembering to click apply. If you don't it doesn't change.

For mac filtering here are the instructions.

Under set up click on wireless settings.

Click on set up access list

At top put a tick in were it says turn access control on. Now this means that only wireless items in your allow list will be able to access your router.

You now need the mac address which you want to have access. Usually these are printed on a label on any devices you have but easiest way to find them is just have everything connected to the router, wired or wireless BEFORE you do this and click on attached devices. All your pc's should be displayed. Turn each item off and press 'refresh'. By doing this you will find out the mac address for each pc you have.

All you need to do now is add the mac addresses manually and add them to your access list.

Click apply

It would now be a good idea to make a back up of your current settings.

You do this by clicking on back up setting and just save the file in my documents or on desktop.

Hope this helps
