I wish people would read the question before answering:

The best free Anti Virus program is the AOL one run by Kaspersky - detection & removal rate over 96%, where as AVG only has a detection & removal rate of 82%.

People have wide ranges of preferences for anti-virus software. My personal preference is AVG whether free or bought. I have the pro version. Yes AVG has started selling their software after years of free service, but, you can still get a free version here...

As far as the system resources are concerned I've seen better and I've seen worse, but, for a free anti-virus program that has great protection and free updates I don't think you're going to find one better than AVG. It's been my experience that AVG is better than Norton and McAfee as well as others.

If you decide to get the pro version with the firewall and have connection problems, disable the firewall until you learn how to use it and just use the default firewall that came with Windows (assuming that you are using XP or later).

P.S.- STAY AWAY FROM NORTON :o)

Here is an excellent from antivirus program from AOL, Active Virus Shield powred by Kaspersky Lab of Russia. Rated # 1 in the world for virus detection. You will get auto updates every hour on the hour, plus an excellent background scanner that really works great. AOL, will only ask you for your email so they can send you a free key good for one year. After one year just request a new key.

I see the AVG fanboys and cheerleaders are out in full force again here on Yahoo Answers!

Mostly noobs, the naive, children, and the computer illiterate use AVG Free. These types love AVG because they say it is easy to use and almost never bothers them with any pop-ups or warnings. Of course AVG Free never bothers them, it hardly ever finds any virus to warn them about!

AVG by Grisoft is definitely NOT "The Best". Unfortunately one of the things it is not the best at, is doing what is is supposed to do, detecting viruses!

In short, AVG is crap!

In test,

after test,

after test,

after test,
http://techsupportalert.com/issues/al_current.htm#Section_0
etc. etc. etc, ad nauseam. AVG has proven itself to be a mediocre performer at best. Absolutely crappy at worst. Missing almost 20%, when trying to detect known malware, in some tests. Not to mention almost non-existent heuristic detection and infrequent "once-a day" updates.

AVG = Average, at best!

There are much better free alternatives, such as Avast, Active Virus Shield, and Avria Anti-Vir.

I like best the AOL Active Virus Shield. Don't let the name AOL fool you. Active Virus Shield is made by Kaspersky which is one of top-rated anti-virus vendors in the world.

In recent tests, the most popular free anti-virus, AVG, was only able to detect about 82% of a very large sample of viruses. On the other hand, Active Virus Shield was able to detect better than 99% in the same test.
http://www.virus.gr/english/fullxml/default.asp?id=82&mnu=82

Active Virus Shield has excellent virus detection rates and is extremely light on using your computer resources. (6mb)

Active Virus Shield also detects and removes spyware.

And it updates 15 to 20 times a day with new virus definitions, 7 days a week.

Free to anyone, AOL member or not from:

I'd go for anti-vir! I used avg a few months ago, but in terms of everything, I like anti-vir better.

AVG Free Edition. It updates itself automatically (both software and their virus lists), runs in the background and has the unique ability of 'healing' infected files. I've been using it for years and never had a problem with it. Its freeware, so you can download it on their website
