If you watch someone and listen for when they get ready to shift you will know by sound for one, and also by the mph they are going when they shift. After that it is just a matter of practicing on where the gears are. If I could learn this way, anyone can. Get out there and just have fun!

engine is on, this means the engine is rotating at about 1000 revolutions per minute at normal Idle. When you press on the gas pedal, the revolutions per minute (RPM) rises.

Your transmission is stationary. since the drive tires are at a stop and connected to the transmission, you must use the clutch to engage it to the rotating engine.

your clutch is what separates the two parts. the moving engine and the stationary transmission. When you have your transmission in the neutral position, you will be able to freely move the stick shifter in a side to side motion.

Start the engine, make sure your transmission is in neutral.

Press on the clutch

engage the transmission to the "low" gear.

press the gas pedal to bring the rpm's up to about 2k rpms

slowly as you give your car more gas, release the clutch

you must release the clutch slowly so you bring up the rpms of the transmission to the same speed as the engine rpms.

now, you will feel the engine and transmission engage into low gear.

when your engine rpm reaches about 3-4k rpms, you will shift your transmission into second gear.

you will do this by depressing the clutch once again and then switching the gear to second gear then slowly matching the speed of the engine rpms to your vehicle speed.

you will feel it completely engage into gear.

you will repeat this process until you reach the desired speed of the vehicle.

when you slow down or "downshift" you will shift from a higher gear to a lower gear. once again using the clutch to adjust the speed of the car down to the engine rpm.

Once you stop, you must have your car in neutral or have the clutch depressed in order to keep the vehicle from stalling.

I hope this helps. next time, you are in a manual transmission car or truck, watch the foot of the driver and how and when he changes gears.

It helps to understand how a vehicle with manual transmission works before you watch and learn.

good luck

Think of the shifting mode as an "H", ok first gear is upper left, 2nd is straight down left, 3rd gear is upper right, 4th is straight down right, reverse is middle, push in and down (as standard, some may vary) but that is basically it. Oh, of course you know how to use the clutch right? In to shift, release, then in ......

remember always that the clutch (pedal on right foot, next to brake pedal), needs to be home (pressed home) for shifting gear: shifting gear is necessary, unlike automatic, for transiting from one speed bracket to another (revving up or down). there you are, once you know that much, your fundamentals are okay: now you need a li'l practice, that's all! happy driving!
