If they can't organise that then what is the point of there being a GB team? Surely the home nations should compete separately.

Hi Footy,
See your point, but is it not in the best of interests to pool the talents, and call it Team GB, or whatever.

After all, where would we be in other than a muddle if, say, we had Team California, Oklahome, Kansas etc ?
No. United States is better. So why not an United Kingdom team.?

Better still, how about announcing the team called "The British Isles"

I.m all in favour of a bit of competion, but surely it best to put the best team together from all Brits.

Bob.

most of you guys are not really getting this, people are saying Gordon is the only scottish player that would get in, do you not even realise that he's already too old to play in an olympic team.. The oldest players that can play will only be 19 now. The Scottish youth teams are actually much better than the English youth teams at the moment so theres a chance a few of these guys will be in the team. Another thing, when exactly is this olympics because we have a proper Football tournament to worry about around that time. IE. The European Championships. I am presuming its around the same time as this year, if so any of the decent players will be injured or on holiday. You cant expect them to play in both tournaments and handle pre-season with their clubs

There should be a team to represent Great Britain in the Olympic Football Competitions of 2012. The main problem would be how to select the players of the squad between the English, Welsh, Northern Irish and the Scottish FA's under-23 squads. Ideally, we would need a team that would cover all of Britain and not just a single part to represent the Home Countries. Great Britain won Olympic Gold Medals in Football in 1900, 1908 and 1912 with a single team...

Yes the should be a GB football team. As the host nation they don't have to qualify. They have an automatic entry. Scotland and Ireland have national teams so any players on them cant play for team GB unless they have dual citizenship. England has a national team. Take players from the national team and England's under 20 team and make the national team. It is a great way to get young people into sports.

Babialu.
the gist of the question was whether or not a GB team should / could be entered in the 2012 olympics. GB stands for Great Britain, which is England Scotland Wales and Ireland, not many Arsenal players there

The Home Nations should not be individually represented as such in football or any of the other events. Participants should compete under a GB banner. We weaken our chances by the proposed division. Each country participating does so from a position of combined strength and ability, there is no reason why we should give them all a head start by entering as a splinter group.

I'm not a football fan but as I understand it most of the objections to a GB football team come from outside England.

Since England has has by far the biggest population in the union, why not give the other country's the opportunity of allowing their players to play for a GB team and if they refuse simply enter a team made up of English players-including youngsters-and call it team GB?

Most of the playes would probably have come from England anyway and this would certainly stop the rest of them spitting their dummies out when their players don't get selected.

I think their should be. Any reason to get kids etc involved in a sport is a good thing. Especially as its our sport and the olympics are here.

My nephew is being sponsered by the Olympics for 2008 and 2012, great little footballer and dreams of playing on the big stage one day. Lots of big clubs interested in him and its really exciting, although he is aware if he signs to any of them, the Olympics is out of the window.

Definately should be a GBR football team - the best of all the nations. We could pick the best manager to from one of the home nations.

As three seperate teams we would not be able to compete but together we are stronger.

There should be if there was a GB bid for the games, but there was not London bid and got it.

Problem here is that the GB that I knew has gone it is now made up of freeloading Scots and Welsh and NI who nobody wants not even the Republicans
