My computer guru tells me to set mine at 10% of my hard drive's space. Virtual memory is supposed to be a quick storage spot on the HD that the computer uses when a program requires more memory than what is just on the RAM. This way the computer can swap the information quickly. You can't have too much virtual memory.

The recommended starting point is 1-1/2 times the amount of physical RAM. You can try different amounts but to much will also slow down the system. When you set the amount, make the min and max equal. Why? If you set a minimum, the memory manager will follow your lead. But when more is needed, the memory manager will take control of the system, essentially stopping all other processes while it allocates another chuck of virtual memory and does a little house cleaning. By setting the amounts the same, it's all allocated at once.
If you have more than one drive, put the Pagefile on the non-system drive for better performance. If you do this, put a small (64Mb) pagefile in the root of the system drive (C:\) for the system to use. This combination works quite well.
The pagefile gets fragmented just like the harddrive does and the usable space shrinks. There is a free pagefile defragment utility at Microsoft in the sysinternals section. I run it on mine every couple of weeks.

Virtual memory is disk memory, in other words the contents of RAM are written and retrieved from disk. You can let Windows use all free disk space as virtual memory, that way you do not need to worry about setting any specific size.
Bear in mind that virtual memory is slow because it is a disk read/write operation. It is very slow when compared to RAM.

Virtual memory should be 1 1/2 times the amount of ram you have on your computer. If you have 512 meg of ram you should have 768 virtual if you have 1 gig ram use 1.5 gig virtual 256 use 384 etc. Hope this helps, Roy
