The process of restoring is just as simple as going back to the computer settings of that day.. You wont lose any data which will be on the hard disk, but the softwares installed after that day might go or become obsolete..

If you do a system restore, you could lose a lot of information, not to mention that it is no guarantee of ridding yourself of malware. See the article below from a Microsoft MVP.
"System Restore should only be used after trying less comprehensive methods of troubleshooting. System Restore changes many files and registry entries, and in some cases might replace more files than you want restored."
The second link below is also from Microsoft. If you look through the Q&A, you'll see reference to the following
"System Restore does not completely uninstall any program if restoring to a point prior to the program installation. As System Restore is based on an inclusionary model, any files added or modified by the installation (which is not monitored by System Restore) or added to or modified in a non-monitored drive will not be tracked. To remove all changes an installation may have made to the system, the user should first use the Add/Remove option in the control panel to remove the application prior to using System Restore. System Restore will undo all recorded changes made to the registry and monitored files caused by the application install, including:
• Deleted or monitored files added to the system from the program installation
• Undo modifications to monitored files made by the installation
• Replacement of the current registry with the registry snapshot taken at the chosen restore point (some current values may persist)"

hard to say without knowing what kind of problem you are having. once I did a restore point anti virus had to be re installed turns out anti virus wasn't deleted only the registry by reinstalling I had the anti virus on the drive twice. They fought each other making the computer hang up glitch had to do a system recovery. I also couldn't delete the program because it couldn't be found. also if your anit virus program has a firewall turn of the windows firewall running two firewalls at the same time really slows things down.

You will lose all the settings, customizations, some programs that are installed after april 2006, but not the files like your Microsoft Office files, Videos and Music, each and every file will be remain at it's place as it is now.

System Restore resets your PC to the way it was on that date. everything newer will be lost!!!
If your PC is so flaky that you think you need to go back that far, do yourself a favour and do a Windows Clean Install.
