ummm the second part has nothing to do with your question.
regarding your question - no, the cat wont break it unless it steps on some key and accidentally deletes something... or unless he is overweight.
cats like PCs because they are warm. get him a hot water bottle and he will leave your PC alone.

You are a good person. Please try to find a good home for the cat. In the meantime, don't worry about the PC. All of the cats I've ever owned never hurt the PC. The only think they can do is bite the wires and get electrified, and the best way to make them leave those alone is to put some clove oil on them. You can put some on the computer too. They also hate the smell of orange, you can leave some orange slices there.

Well, first of all, kudos to you for being kind enough to find the cat a home!
About your problem. I would only worry about the wires, as the other poster said. If you want to deter the cat from that area and are unable to block his access to the room, you can try citrus. Cats don't like citrus smells, so you can keep a cut lemon or orange around the area, or citrus candles and sprays, and they should avoid it.
Also, there is a pad that is made to deter cats and dogs from surfaces. You can get them at pet stores, or online. The cats do not like the feel of the pad under their feet, and will avoid it. It may be too big for your desk, but here's the link just in case:

Good luck, hope you find a home for the kitty soon!

Hmmm....maybe the cat's just after your mouse!
I suppose you'll just have to make sure (somehow) your 'adopted' cat stays out of the room with the pc in. It's a shame your kindness got you into a bit of a mess but you should take comfort in the fact that you are a kind person.
You can have a star by way of consolation!

Use a spray bottle with water in it. This is useful for keeping cats off of anything. Just be careful not to spray the computer itself. :)
Also, my cat is terrified of sheets of paper or plastic shopping bags shaken in his direction. It's how I broke him from getting on the kitchen counters and dinner table.
