Good evening, Wabby.
After having read your question and additional details, I decided to drop my two penny here.
I don't think their Ego is what causing them to be hypocrites against each other, I deliberately believe their problem resolves around competence. And such behavior is quite acceptable in Human's attitude.
Some guys will compete with other guys and some will join the race. Either way, it is still called competence.
When a Basketball player becomes an identity on his/her team, his/her teammates will predictably try to improve their ability to become an identity, too, or try to become more popular than the main identity on the Basketball Team. It's Human nature to seek praise.
Being a hypocrite is also predictable and can be considered acceptable. The person who tries to degrade another reveals his/her jealousy without even realizing it. He/she wishes to be like the person /he/she is degrading but realizes her/his ability is limited. That's what we actually live for, Wabby, we live to compare ourselves with those who resolved around us.
Everybody has been having a great time with their laptop computer, but because Mac is an identity and is pretty expensive and attractive, everyone wishes for one. The person who sits in class with a Compaq notebook will likely to degrade the rest of classroom with a Macbook because he/she is simply jealous...
How can you prevent these guys from showing off?
Answer: Never respond to what he/she says. However, your guy friend says " Kenny doesn't even know how to dribble the ball well."
You should say " I feel like visiting the pool today."
This should inform the guy that you are not interested in hearing hypocrisy from him/her.
Dad.

I am a man, and I can't hang out with these kind of people (men or women). I'm not saying to change your friends, but at least find some people you can interact with on a reciprocal level. Find compatible friends. Anyway, sometimes people do this when they run in packs, it helps them feel like they belong. If you don't want to break relations with certain members of this group, then talk to them one to one if you get the chance, its likely they will be more 'themself' and then you can truly get to know them. If these guys are relatively young, chances are they will get over it when they find their own 'real' strengths. Its not necessarily an ego thing. Its animal instinct that almost every young man wants to be the 'alpha male' the leader of the pack. Its just a human form of natural selection, though it seems to work in reverse with humans. Me, I've always been a lone wolf.

The next time one of them comes to talk to you about one of the others try telling him that you've noticed that too and maybe the other guys are just trying to build themselves up because they have low self esteem. Talk about the fact that you think it's sad that they have to build themselves up that way just to feel ok about themselves. You could add that it sometimes gets on your nerves but you don't say anything because you know why they are doing it. This will make him think and take a look at himself. No man wants a girl to feel sorry for him or think he's got issues. As each one comes to you, you should be able to make your point to each of them. Hopefully, they'll get it. They sound like harmless jocks that are proud of themselves in the sports area but have no real confidence anywhere else. It also sounds to me like they are trying to impress you. Good luck...I hope this works.

When I was younger there was a saying "Self praise is no recommendation". I would also tell them since you are a friend to both you don't want to be put in the middle. If they have complaints or concerns about the other address it face to face not behind each others back.

Pick better friends.
Or you just have to be sarcastic when they're bragging about themselves. Say something like "Oh yeah, I'll bet you're just the greatest in the world" or "yeah, you're better than Lebron huh?" - they'll take the hint if you do that enough. And that's in a way where they can't really get mad at you.

i think of Obama found out that the Lies of Washington, and the ego feeding completed via maximum politicians, and the "highfalutin techniques" of all politicians happens to be the biggest problem in united statesa.. Obama had a majority of those suggestions in his head on how he became going to make modifications, yet then he became elected president, and shown how the rustic somewhat works, and all his suggestions merely went up in smoke.
