I have a MyBook Pro 500GB and when I press the button, it doesn't turn off. It used to, but not anymore. I have to unplug the USB plug to let it turn off, but I don't know if this hurts the drive. I do know unplugging the AC hurts it more. What should I do?

Kartz I already tried that. It doesn't work. I even downloaded the WD utility to stop the drive or spin it down. Nothing

Sounds like it's busted, and the only safer way I know of disconnecting it is to shut down the computer it's connected to before disconnecting it.

At the lower right corner of the screen there is a tray of small icons. Look for the one with a green arrow w/c says "Safely Remove Hardware". Double click it, then click the stop button.

WDs have not got a swap, do the "accurately get rid of hardware" bit, unplug it from the usb port and unplug it from the mains ability. once you plug it back interior the subsequent time, plug in mains first, then the usb.

Disconnecting it from the USB won't damage the drive. Unless you're writing data to it at the second you disconnect it.
