1. Base on balls.

2. Passed ball on third strike (you don't have to swing at it).

3. Hit by pitch.

4. Error in the field.

5. Catcher's interference. (Rare, but it's in the rule book.)

6. I suppose if you want to get technical about it, if you are substituted in as a pinch runner.

LATER EDITING: Someone below mentions getting on because of a fielder's choice. Excellent point. But all the people mentioning a balk as a way of getting on are dead wrong. Only baserunners advance on a balk, and the hitter is not a baserunner. I read the reference provided by one writer, and it says nothing about this.

Hit by pitch
walk
dropped 3rd strike & run to first
reach on error
catcher's inteference
fielder's choice

The batter is not awarded first base on a balk. Only runners already on base advance.

Good answers above but everyone forgot that a hitter can reach base if the pitcher commits a balk.
In the event of a balk each runner is awarded one base (in contrast to a walk, in which runners only advance if forced).

Sorry my bad

Catcher's interference. The catcher makes contact with the batter during his swing. The batter is awarded first base. It usually happens once or twice a season.

Error by a fielder, hit by pitch, base on balls, third strike swung at and missed by the catcher ,as long as first base is unoccupied, and you beat the ball there.

Only the runners already on base get to move up on a balk, not the hitter.
