I have a HP 2015AP aka Compaq Presario V2000.
I have just put in 2G of RAM but feel it's time to upgrade the rest.
I want to get a bigger processor, hard drive and update the vid/graphics too.
Which of these are upgradable and how do I tell them apart from desktop items when buying online?

Hi..

If you know what you're doing, then the sky is the limit for you.. :-)

Go to this website : http://partsurfer.hp.com/cgi-bin/spi/main

you can pick any part what you wish to upgrade and buy it on-line.

But in my opinion, the best you can upgrade is -

1. Bigger capacity hard disk,
2 Much faster processor that are compatible with your laptop mainboard.

Graphic card, i don't think you can upgrade it, since it's soldered on-board.

Money-wise, it's not really worth it to upgrade all the above item for your laptop. It's expensive and it's quite hard to sell your used part to anywhere (online or to your friend)

My best advise to you - Sell you laptop as it is to your friend or eBay.., and top-up a little to get the best and latest laptop your money can buy - Compaq DV6000t looks like a good candidate to you.

All of those should be upgradeable but will definitely void your warranty. To specify that you are looking for notebook components simply specify so. Look for Notebook processors (of the type that fit your motherboard), notebook graphics cards (that use the socket available on your motherboard), and notebook hard drives (that use the connector/s available on your motherboard). Also make sure it will fit in your notebook and be sure to do a search on tutorials on how to do it.

http://www.newegg.com is a great site for buying things like this.

On the other hand, the person above me is right, you are better off buying a whole new laptop.

Basically, none are upgradeable except the hard drive.

Run the Belarc Advisor to see what your laptop components are. Then, replace the 40 GB 4200 rpm hard drive with a larger and faster drive with more cache, if you want.

For example, a Seagate 80 GB 7200 rpm (with 8MB cache) drive would be a big improvement.

Go to HP's website hp.com and enter your laptops information. It does refer to the Compac and also has several manuals and diagnostic material available.

Your best bet is as the others have said just buy a new one, unless you want the challenge. Good luck, Roy

Upgrading your laptop is not an easy feat.

If you're looking at upgrading all that you're probably just better off buying a new laptop.
