Check the radiator hoses first. If they are spongy, they could be collapsing from the vacuum of the water pump.
If they look OK, then renew radiator.

Keep your cool and don't panic under any circumstances, that is most important. Pay attention not only to the car in front of you but all the traffic in front of you, if a car that is 6 cars in front of you jams on his brakes, all the cars that follow will have less distance to stop so be aware of what is happening. Turn off your phone, or better yet leave it at home, don't fuss with the radio or the air, and make sure all your mirrors are lined up before you even get on the highway. First and foremost, stay relaxed and focused on driving.

Well first off start looking for a new car because it has 180,000 miles on it. secondly you might want to check your fan belt, radiator, tubes, water pump, and to see if your car actually has water in it to start. To check all of those things just use your factory manual that you recieved with the car. If none of those things add up then go drive down to the toyota dealership and they may be able to tell you some more things to check on the car.

From my experience in the workshop, a vehicle that overheats at high speed and normal at low speed means the radiator need a cleanout.

I suspect your radiator is partly blocked. If your thermostat
was faulty it would o/heat after driving normally for about
3 kilometres. thermostats are cheap and would change it as
well as having the radiator serviced, especially if it's old
