Hedge Trimmers everytime(petrol). Cut it back quite hard. For the side start at the bottom of the hedge and using an upward motion cut into the hedge, then bring the trimmers back down cutting the bits the first cut missed. As for the top use a good pair of A-frame ladders with an adjustable sliding ladder. Use a smooth cutting action going from right to left then clear off the top.As for the health and safety aspects use gloves/ ear defenders and safety glasses.

Aah! I think its so cute when young people seek advice on how to trim a hedge for the first time. well dont be nervous be confident at all times and try to build a relationship with the hedge first. No body said your first hedge would be easy so you need compassion when trimming for the first time.
just approach daintily and make a casual gesture to indicate that you are ready but not to easy. and show the trimmer to it in a loving way and just do what comes naturally. it will just come to you.
Next thing you know you will be doing other peoples hedges too and you will have all the confidence in the world.

j.pee,
All great answers so far. Problem is that not one of them asked you What You Are Pruning!!
Hedges can be anything from Flowering Shrubs to Evergreen, to Privets. Each and every has a way and time to shape. Each has needs that can help or destroy.
The real question should be not with or how, however, what is it I am pruning and then the with, how, and when! Write back. I am gjgjobs@yahoo.com and know I can help.
