When you borrow money from a person you give them a piece of paper promising to pay them back. It's called an
IOU.

It simply means I Owe yoU, back when I was little if you ran out of money at a local store, before chain stores now.
You could write on a piece of paper
IOU
$2.37
And next time you came in you could easily pay your bill plus the owed money from last time.
It was a good policy that kept customers happy and never feeling they had to put stuff back because they couldn't pay. Happy customers are returning customers and paying customers, they are happy to come back and pay because they were treated with dignity and respect.

it's pretty much a worthless piece of paper you write IOU "X " amount of dollars on...depending on how much you borrow from someone, usually without their permission. just make sure you pay them back, and get your IOU in return.

Say, for example, you take a $5 bill from somebody's wallet. You'll replace it with a note that says "IOU $5 -- Diamond_P_Kirby"

It means I owe you, and it is a promissory note declaring that you will pay the amount of money that you owe.
