Why did Charlie die? I was so upset! well anyways.... any comments on the season finale? When does the new season start?

The new season most likely starts Feb. 6, 2008. Unless ABC changes the day, which is unlikely, they might change back to 9 pm though.

Jan or Feb 2008 for 16 new episodes in a row.
Charlie died because that was Desmond's vision. Charlie felt that if he did NOT die after turning off the flashing light and drowning that Claire and Aaron would not be rescued.

usually the new seasons start in sept. but there are also times when they don't start some shows until mid season. so just have to wait and see.
