In expansion something gets bigger and in contraction it gets smaller - usually, in physics, because the molecules move faster and get further apart with a rise in temperature.

Expansion and contraction are completely different. Expansion is the increases in dimension of any matter and right opposite to it is contraction, which is decrease of the matter due to certain physical conditions.

Expansion and contraction are opposites. expansion is when something gets bigger, contraction is when it gets smaller or shorter.

expansion:
means when the heart becomes full of air it is known as expaansion
contraction:
means when the heart becomes empty it is known as contraction
