it crashed twice. 1st time, it went to a black screen that says restart normally but it just keep restarting and going back to the same place.and it went to a blue screen that has codes on it. CAN'T GET TO THE MAIN DESKTOP. he fixed it by putting a disc in and fixed it. it was normal. it crashed again months later but this time he tried to fix it the same way, but it didn't work. its a compaq.

Most of the time it is a software problem rather than a hardware one. Your OS could be damaged. Reformat should be a last resort. If you have someone who could help you repair your Win XP, try this:

If this is a new laptop and still under warranty, go back to the vendor.

Claim warranty.., file a complaint.

Normally, HP/Compaq have a very good after sales service.

Don't bother trying to fix it yourself if it is still under warranty.

Manytimes this happened when there is a problem with the Ram. specially the blue screen comes where the ram is bad... try opening the Ram cover and reinstall the ram after cleaning it.

Why don't you just format it ? :D thats the easier way you can make it work again :D seems like there are some missed files in the Operating System you are using ! :) is it Windows ? :O
