I survived Hurricane Andrew in Miami, FL on August 24th, 1992. I was alone in a CBS concrete block home reinforced with rebar. That one small destructive storm only lasted from 1:22 a.m. until 5:34 a.m. In my neighborhood, the winds reached 171 miles per hour and the windmeter broke at 212! That's no typo. 212 miles per hour. The wind outside already sounded like a jet engine instead of a freight train. Then suddenly, I heard the unmistakable sound of another gust of wind rushing toward the house. I remember hearing myself saying, "Brace yourself. Brace yourself." The next thing I heard was a loud BANG as an F5 tornado slammed into the house knocking me unconcious from the barometric pressure(s). The house survived intact, but was knocked an inch and a half off its foundation.
Over the next three days as I attempted to help a friend of mine secure his properties, I saw and heard things that no human was meant to see. I saw entire sides of buildings torn completely off. US1 was littered with cars from car dealerships that were thrown GOD knows how far from where they started. I saw an 18 wheel truck lying on its side blocking the highway at one point. There were skid marks and then about 30 feet of nothing before the truck rested. The driver was never found. To this day, the images haunt me and I seek out other survivors of natural disasters to deal with that experience.

I once lived out in the country and our house was near-missed by a tornado. I was sitting on our sofa and we heard the storm coming. I was cooking dinner and got up to go into the kitchen to turn off the stove in case we had to go to the basement. Right as I was leaving the room, the storm hit and the window across from the sofa blew in. If I had been sitting there, I would have been as shredded as the sofa was. As we were running for the basement, all the downstairs windows blew inward and all the upstairs windows blew outward. We lost part of the roof and the kitchen (which was an addition to the house) was lifted off the foundation and set back down 2 feet to the east. We never even made it into the basement, it was over within a few seconds, but I will never forget that sound. **shiver**

I've experienced tornado and earthquake and freaked me out the first time around.
My tornado experience:
When I was in high school...one day I didn't feel good and came home from school early; there was no sign of rain -the sun was out. I remember looking at my watch to see what time it was before I lay down to take a nap and the time was 2:30pm. My kitty cat cuddled with me and laid across my neck. When i woke it was pitch black in my room, I was mad thinking that my family forgot to wake me up for dinner, when I glanced over at my sister's bed she wasn't there then I started checking everybody's bedroom and nobody was home. The house was dark, I look out the window and it was dark out too so I look at my watch to see what time it was and it was 3:30... then I started to wonder why nobody was home at 3:30 in the morning. Then I remember my cat was still laying across my neck when I woke up so I thought maybe I'm still asleep and just having a bad dream. Just when I was about to go back to bed I heard loud clanking noise outside so I looked out the window and saw big huge ice dropping denting the car in the driveway. It was hailing! I got scared, the phone wasn't working and the power was out. Within minutes I heard huge siren (it must've been the tornado alert) then consecutively the power came back (light came on), the phone rung... I got startled. My brother called and told me there was a huge tornado came through town but our house was intact. That tornado took an entire high school of the ground, damage a cathedral church, and wiped out almost half of the city and it was only 3:30 in the afternoon - I was only asleep for an hour when it all happened. How freaky was that? My 2nd tornado experience my friend drag me to chase it but I didn't last too long I took cover after a few minutes dodging flying objects.
My Earthquake experience:
I had just moved to California, the house I was renting a room from was kind of old. Every time you close the refrigerator door the kitchen would shake that's how old the house was. One day, I was getting ready to leave for work but decided to get a drink first when I closed the refrigerator door--I closed it pretty hard--the kitchen started to shake but I didn't pay too much attention until I noticed the window was rattling too and would not stop so I went back to check the fridge but the door was closed. Then the entire house started shaking, I got so scared thinking I caused it... not until I got to work that I found out I just experienced my first earthquake.
That's my natural disaster story and the first time around was FREAKY!

of course
i am a survivor of hurricane Katrina. i lived in New Orleans, in the heart of the city. My house was a few blocks down from the levee, but the flooding was still tremendous. Luckily, my mom dad sister and I fly up to New Jersey, seeking refuge. We could not come back for several weeks. When we finally came back to New Orleans, there was nothing left. It was devastating. The only thing left of our house was our bent, stainless steel refrigerator, damaged but still in one.
We decided not to build back in New Orleans. We are currently living in a town home in Clearwater Florida. Our new house that is in construction will be finished hopefully by July.
I am 12 years old, and you have no idea how scary and sad it was to see little bits of your house floating around everywhere.
