Dexamethasone, is a steroid.

Did your Dr. not tell you what it was and why he prescribed it to you?
It's standard eye drops for an eye infection or given before an eye operation.

Tobradex is a combination eyedrop containing an antibiotic (tobramycin) and an anti-inflammatory steroid (dexamethasone). Commonly, it's used for eye infections like conjunctivitis and/or after surgical eye procedures to reduce the risk of infection and treat inflammation of the cornea and conjunctiva

It is an antibiotic for the eye. You don't drink it, these are eye drops. Tobrex is equally good, just a little lighter (I think Tobradex has some cortisone in it).
