i am writing this from turkey presently and will explain the problem to you. i am a turkish kurd myself, turkey is made up of a high number of kurds. you cant distinguish a kurd from a turk. the problem is america is trying to seperate kurds into categories to buy cheap petroleum from iraq. it wants iraq in 3 but the problem is so messy since kurds are all unique in the regions they are located. for example there are sunni kurds, shiite kurds, iranian kurds, turkish kurds hell there are even christian kurds all distinct from one another. turkish kurds will even fight iraqis kurds for their homeland turkey. the US is so hated presently they want to only deal with north iraq and create a territory that is kurdish only. this makes oil cheaper than buying it from the rest of iraq that is a complete mess right now. they also want to link iraqis kurds with iranian kurds the problem is the two dont speak the same dialect. which if bush had done homework he would have been more prepared for about to see what has happened. turkey has it IN THEIR CONSITITION to go to war if kurds create kurdistan, they also have the 9th largest army in the world and I as a kurd will go to battle if kurdistan is formed in iraq only because pkk has killed so many other kurds.

to answer your questions they did not listen to the US with cyprus they wont listen with iraq.

If I were President, this is what I would do. Convince the Turks to hold out for the time being. Go to the Kurds and tell them to reign in their people or the US can't stop the Turks from rolling over them. Since the Kurds are infinately more friendly to the US then the Shiites or Sunnis, I would put bases in the north to help maintain the peace. If the Kurds attack the US, then we let the Turks roll over the Kurds.

The Turks & Kurds have always had issues because the Kurds want their own country. I do not believe the Turks will chance intervetion by the US. Unlike some of our citizens Turkey knows the danger of a fight involving the US. They want at least decent relations with the US. I believe diplomacy can fix this.

Hopefully, the Turks will agree to work with the US to stop the Kurdish attacks in Turkey in exchange for keeping Turkey out of Iraq.

I agree it is indeed a pickle.

If US had done its job properly to stop Kurdish terrorists in that area, Turkey wouldn't have intervened at all.

First thing for US Government is to accept that those Kurdish groups there, are hosting the terrorist groups and expecting some benefits out of that.

As long as this alliance goes on, Turkey has to be involved in this area. Otherwise they will keep using the resources, provided by US, to attack Turkey. Turkey has no other choice.
