Here are some of the best vampire works I have read:
Dracula by Bram Stoker
Mina by Marie Kiraly
The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova
Anne Rice’s Vampire Chronicles
Kim Harrison’s Rachel Morgan series about a witch who is a bounty hunter and works with a vampire and a pixie
Carrie Vaughn’s Kitty Norville series about a werewolf radio talk show host
Jim Butcher’s Harry Dresden series about a wizard private investigator in Chicago who works with vampires and werewolves
Laurell K. Hamilton’s Anita Blake series about a female vampire slayer/lover.

For Young Adults:
Sweetblood by Pete Hautman
Midnight's Choice by Kate Thompson, part of a trilogy that begins with “Switchers” and ends with “Wild Blood”
Companions of the Night by Vivian Vande Velde

If you just want to kill some time and have some fun reverting back to childhood, check out The Bailey School Kids series by Debbie Dadey and Marcia Thornton Jones. They have some humorous titles like "Vampires Don't Wear Polka Dots" and "Dracula Doesn't Rock and Roll".

I'll go with the most obvious and say Anne Rice. Start with Interview with the Vampire. The protagonist, Louis, is a whiner, but you need to read that one to get to the real goods. Next, you should read The Vampire Lestat. It's nothing at all like the movie; NOT A BIT! Just follow the series of books narrated by Lestat and you won't be disappointed in the least.

The original novel of this genre, Bram Stoker's "Dracula", establishes all the cliches most readers associate with vampires (Transylvania castles, ravished maidens, stakes through the heart), although the English poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge also wrote about a "spiritual" vampire in "Christabel". After familiarizing yourself with vampire literary conventions, sink your teeth into Ann Rice's "The Vampire Chronicles", starting with "Interview with a Vampire "(1976), The Vampire Lestat" (1985), and Queen of the Damned" (1985). The series runs for another seven novels, but I stopped reading with "Queen of the Damned".

You should read The Blood Books by Tanya Huff. They are about a vampire named Henry Fitzroy who teams up with a private investigator named Vicki Nelson to solve supernatural cases together, like with demons and werewolves. There is also a show about it now called Blood Ties. I would definitely recommend both the show and the book. I hope you enjoy it. Also, if you don't enjoy those books, you can always read the vampire chronicles by Anne Rice about Lestat de Lioncourt.

The Vampire Chronicles by Rice and Real Vampires Have Curves, which is new and the first in a series, but it's good. The Historian is also really good and it lends a new spin to Vamp novels.

Yes!! I love Bloodsucking Fiends and You Suck by Christopher Moore. He is a little offbeat - no he is a LOT offbeat and his books are hilarious! Also, I dont know how old you are, but I just read a very good but adult vampire book. I wont mention the title here because of the young'uns but if you are over 18, let me know and I will pass the name on. Pax - C

Anne RIce- If you haven't already read them They are PG .
interview with the vampire is the first, there is a whole series of them. I really enjoyed them and have reread some of them several times- not that I am a vampire fan, it's just she writes so well.

Also PN Elrod writes a lot of vampire stuff. Bloodlist is the first of her books about Jack Fleming, a journalist who is vampired and becomes a P.I.
