I found out I am prego 2 weeks ago. Since then my hubby and I have been looking to move closer to my folks so my mom can babysit. Well Wed. one of my co-workers approched me about why I am looking to move when I just built a new home, so I told her what was going on. About that time one of my other co-workers walked in so we all started talking about how I am going to the doc next Thur. to confirm and I was planning to tell the bosses when the doc confirmed. Friday when I got to work one of my bosses told me they are going to cut down expenses in the office and the office manager is the one to go and they are getting an answering service. She was real assuring that I could find something (even after I confessed to her about my pregnancy). I wasn't to concerned it could be because of the preg. until my Dad and hubby brought it up. I mean how much r they really saving? I only make $25k. Have you ever had anything like this happen? Do u think it will be hard to find a new job?

I know legally they can't NOT hire me based on being prego, but my hubby says to wait until they hire me to tell them. I'm so scared they will tell me something like..We've decided to go another way and let me go once they find out. I need a job so any advice would be awesome!

I don't know for sure that it is because I'm prego, but it just makes me wonder. Everyone in that office has known each other for a very long time so someone could have told the bosses and it came across as me holding a secret or me just becoming a liabilty. I dunno..

First off, since you didn't tell your bosses that you were pregnant until after they told you about the layoff, you have no way to prove that they knew, & they probably didn't. Secondly, you're not going to show for a few months, so get a new job & don't tell them you're pregnant until after you've made it through your first trimester, they can't fire you for that.

I had been working part time at a rather famous fast food resturant for a week when I found out that I was pregnant with my 3rd child. I let the managers know as soon as it was confirmed because I am considered high risk due to a heart condition(which they knew about when I was hired) and I wanted to make sure they knew what was going on just incase something happened at work.
During my 2nd week of work I had to make a bee line for the bathroom due to morning sickness. I made sure that I used the bathroom located in the play room because at that time of day there were no customers in that area. In fact the only people in there where a manager and another employee on their breaks.
When I came out of the bathroom, the manager pulled me aside and said that a customer had heard me and didn't buy the fact that I was pregnant. I looked around and still saw no one but the the manager and other employee in the SOUND PROOF room.
When I mentioned this to another manager, I was told that I was probably just imagining things and that I should be a little less sensitive. The next day I was pulled into the store manager's office and told that my work was unsatisfactory and that they had decided to let me go.
When I came in to pick up my check, the manager that had trained me asked me what had happened and why I was not working anymore. I told her what the store manager had said and her exact words were "That is bull ****, you were doing better then half the older crew members. I then told her what had happened the day before I spoke with the store manager and she told me that 2 other women had made the same complaint about the same 2 managers while they were pregnant. She herself had problems with them when she had been pregnant 6 months earlier.
For me there is no real way to prove that I was fired due to the 2 managers and their problems with pregnant women so there is no real way for me to do anything about it. I really didn't need the job anyway, I just enjoyed the break from my two older children and the house, but after that I decieded that I belonged at home with them and that at least everyone there understands why I have to run to the bathroom!
For you finding another job will depend on where you look. With you being so early in your pregnancy you wouldn't have to tell them right off the bat(like in the interview) that you are expecting unless what you do could harm you or the baby at this point.
Good luck with the job and the pregnancy!

Companies can fire and hire at will. But if you think that you were fired because of being pregnant, then get a lawyer and take legal action.

It is unlawful for companies to discriminate people for race, age (unless the person isn't of age or there is an age specification), gender... including pregnancy....

If this is something you truly feel isn't a coincidence, then pursue legal action.

As for landing another job, I don't see why it should be hard. You aren't obligated to mention your pregnancy - since it sounds like you're in your first trimester and not yet showing - but if you're hired on you should before it become obvious. So long as you have the qualifications, I see no problem.

First you may be right it could be because you are pregnant. However, since they never said that or even hinted around it you may have no recourse. They can go into court and tell the judge and jury that you abandoned your job when you went looking to move away from where you are now.

They actually will be saving a whole lot more than 25K especially if you had thier insurance. If they are partially self funded your termination will wind up saving them around $45,000. YOur salary of about 25K and another 20K in medical bills, possibly more if you have complications on thier nickel.

depending on what you did, it won't be hard to find a new job. Strangely enough my wife applied for a new job when she was 4 months pregnant AND GOT IT. Of course it was for a maternity wear store...but it was still a job.

It doesn't sound like they fired you based on the pregnancy. However if you find something now you should be fine. Most people won't hire you once you get near your 3rd trimester because you'll be going on leave soon. I'm not sure why your husband and dad think them firing has anything to do with your pregnancy. It sounds like a coincidence to me.

If they "laid you off" because of your pregnancy, they have discharged you illegally. I would consult an employment attorney. They usually don't charge you for the consultation and if they think you have a case, they will only charge a % of your settlement/judgement if you win. In the meantime, try to find a new job as quickly as possible and don't tell them until you have to. Talk to the lawyer ASAP! Good luck!

If you feel at all that you were laid off because of being pregnant, get a lawyer. You need to keep a log of anything that happens in case you have to go to court.
