router is not needed if your laptop has built in wireless device, if you try to buy router, buy the one which has wide wireless range and high speed in transferring data of course so that you can surf the internet wherever or transfer data you are as you're in the wireless range

If you have wifi on your laptop, its a matter of setting up the computer for wireless, get a wireless router, I can't name the steps of getting connected of my head, but you can find instructions through a google search.

Most wireless router will do. Make sure your laptop has a wireless receiver built in or you will need to add on. There are CardBus or USB Adapters available. D-Link or the Fry`s special, it makes no differents. Make sure you have someone who know how on hand to setup wireless. Make sure you setup WEP.

I've never successfully done it, but supposedly it can be done without a router. If your cards have a 'ad-hoc' mode. The computers have to be in the same workgroup, but...

cards in ad-hoc mode, request an ip address (ipconfig /renew)... wait... windows wil by default assign a number. once that's done - 'sposed to be able to browse and share and such

good luck
