a dog question before civilization?

i never heard about wild golden retrievers or wild chows

i was just curious where would dogs live b4 we took them in as pets? did they hunt in packs? what did they eat? were they more predator or prey?

Before domestication, dogs were wolves. Over a long period of time we have influenced the development of different breeds through artificial selection for traits we want.

As wolves they:
.. hunted in packs
.. ate whatever they could catch
.. were predators

well the first dogs were wolves and other hunting dogs. throughout the years people have breeded those dogs with other ones creating new breeds. I would consider the dogs before more as predator and they probably hunted in packs.

Dogs are descended from wolves. Humans bred and selected them for certain traits, and so domestic dogs were developed, and special breeds.
Dogs are still able to interbreed freely with wolves. The hybrids are fully fertile, not like the sterile hybrids that occur sometimes when different species mate.
