yes it is true...because the truck was designed to have the air flow over it smoothly with the tailgate up. it creates a pocket of air within the bed of the truck that the air glides over. If you have the tailgate down, it puts pressure on you rear tires thereby decreasing your fuel milage.

Everyone is right the "drive with the gate down" is a wives tale. What you can do is put a fiberglass cover over the bed. That will create a smooth "wing" type of an air flow over the bed, and you get a great place to lock up the groceries too.

tailgate down allows the air to flow freely over the truck and off the back end as opposed to the air going over the cab and hitting a wall at the back end. If you could see air, you would see exactly this.
