My heart goes out to you, because you have been taken. (Especially being that I am an advocate for the rights of women, besides being a clinical psychiatrist).
Hope that you saved the webpage that you download the software from. If you send me the webpage via my email on answers, I will send it to my contacts with "Interpol", for criminal action. Plus I have a software program from New Zealand, called "SmartWhois", willl trace the IP & Domain for you. And I will send it back to you for criminal action. (Plus I will take criminal action from this end).
When you download a program, always save to documents or some other file on your pc. Then you want to open and scan with your antivirus/antispyware program. If you notice that the program when opened as no valid certificate, does not show the company like, "microsoft", or name related to the webpage, etc. etc., the risk is great that the program is a scam if you install.
There a program that for some unknown reason have not kept the Lic., certficate updated, don't list any name. Then you must know for sure that you trust the software 100% before, you install.
I use an antivirus program, not very well know, because the Govt., of China, has not given permission to advertise the program or allowed the program to be rated.
Have used, Twister Trojan Antivirus for over ten years and I only pay a one time fee for life of $29.99. Includes all updates and all new versions for life. Has two background scanners, one kills viruses in real time that are embedded, hidden in webpages, downloads of compressed files of any kind, music, films, etc. etc. etc. Plus the second scanner is a Dynamic Defense System, that stops all download and advises you if a trace virus code is found, or the program has no certifiate, or owner name. Will upload the file and in real time will determine if safe or not. Plus will advise you of your options if the file does not have a valid certificate, or owner name. You have options to kill the entire download, trust the file, etc. etc.
This antivrus program would have saved you $80.00
Program is out of Beijing, China. http://www.filseclab.com
You can only run one antivirus program or you will have serious conflict with your system. You can run three or four antispyware, as one will catch what the others missed.

This is one of the most common instances of downloading software and is ALWAYS going to occur. Up Front - I would immediately download your software before you can't. The link is probably only good for 24 hours and after that you are screwed.
What you saw most likely is that this company's Certificate was outdated and could not be validated. This is simply the Internet Organization that software vendors register their websites at . It is like a Better Business Bureau of all commercial websites.
The truth is that this is as old and quaint as Windows 95 machines and many, many companies starting out originally registered and then just did not pay annual dues anymore after the first year.
Bill Gates and Microsoft think this is appauling and a severe lapse of security in all circles and is revamping this system of registering a commercial website (receives income) to get their Certificates. This is one of the greatest innovations in the new Windows Vista which now disallows your computer from going to these sites. The problem is that practically the entire industry of internet business has to get on the stick (they are very slow and their yachts) and pay their dues to re-validate their Certificates of their websites.
You can get all this over Google.com but for now if you are really paranoid about things I would start downloading some known products for practice and watch the same things occur when you try and install software. Like known safe products are like free Adobe reader, iTunes free player, WinZip free zip file opener, free Real Player, free Quick Time player - download anything you know is a safe product and you are going to see the same thing everytime. You will see some of them have up to date Certificates and some of them don't. The warning box to proceed practically ALWAYS says that Microsoft can not "verify" the source of the download and that it may be dangerous and "do you trust" this company.... that occurs EVERY time you install software...
So like I said - if you don't want to lose your 80 bucks you better go claim your purcahse immediately - but also go with the flow with Microsoft.... Do you trust this company ? Then proceed. If not, search on Google about the domain name (like cool company .com) and then search the prodcut name (like cool product software). Is there any bad press out there ? You were right then and apparently not too many people including myself understood that this is what you meant from the beginning as we had all assumed you are just a newbie to things.

The information box that pops up when you are downloading a software is just a warning to alert you that the browser is not sure about the authenticity of the software. But this is harmless in most cases and you can simply ignore it. Click on the save option and save it to a folder.
Run the file that you have just saved.
Incase you are still not able to run it, include more information about the kind of file downloaded (.exe/.jar etc..)

Let me guess..U used internet explorer to download the program.
if this is the case--explorer is bad at downloading. a small delay and it will show download is complete. {check if the size of the program u downloaded is the same as that u saw in the site}. Use a download program hereafter.

Hmmm.... just like you have stated you might have got yourself into a nasty and tricky scam, you cant' do any thing about it right now but you can trace the original website and ask your internet service provider to report it as a scam website, so more wont' be tricked into it.That's the least you can you.
