They are wood and have some kind of finish on them. I noticed they are beginning to show fingerprints from the chairs being grabbed by the back a lot to move them around. I'm afraid to use soap and water. Don't want to wreak my chairs. But their must be a way.

Use a good furniture polish that you put on (will be oily) and then buff off with soft cloth. They are obviously goo wood chairs and you should always clean real furniture at least once a year. Good luck.

Murphy's Oil Soap is awesome on wood. You could also use Endust or Pledge.
