because i was paying for this body spray and they asked me for my number.. and i just thought it was weird

Some stores you telephone number to track where their customers are coming from in order to open new stores. Sometimes its to track your purchases in order to send coupons. You can always decline.

I have found most stores ask for your number and one I can think of that will ask is Target.
