This IS the answer: It is easier to draw.
Animators knew that nobody would care or notice too much if there were fewer fingers on a hand. It's easier to draw big shapes than small ones.
And about anime: Yes, they do have 5 fingers. They take a realistic approach to figure drawing, except with facial expressions which they exaggerate more than four-fingered cartoons. Ever notice when an anime character is, for example, scared? His mouth takes up half his head and his eyes shrink and sweat slithers up and down his cheeks. Not very realistic. Every style of cartooning has its own quirks.
For "bubbly" cartoons like The Simpsons or Mickey Mouse, "Bubbly" hands were more appropriate and easier.

Because for some reason, it's a lot easier to draw someone with 3 fingers and a thumb than 4 fingers and a thumb.
Though, this only seems to be true of American animation -- nearly all of the anime I've seen have 5-fingered characters.

cause it's easy for drawning & manage finger on hand's it look good for cartoon's character. But in anime i dont see any 34 finger's charecter cause they want to draw real person. And they are pretty good.
3 Finger for cartoon cause kids like it. Like tom have 3 finger & 1 Thimb. Many cartoon have animal charecter so they draw 3 finger & 1 Thumb.

In my warped opinion I think that way back in the early history of cartooning that the illustrators didnt want the cartoon characters to ever have the opportunity to ever flip the bird. Having 4 fingers on a hand solved that issue. Hope that answers your question. Have a good day.

Simple, Because Walt Disney felt 4 fingers and a thumb were too tough to draw, and so no one else bothered either.

My brother-in-law is an animator. The honest to goodness truthful answer to this is that it is easier and faster to draw. They're under extreme deadlines and this just makes it easier.

It's just how the illustrator chose to draw them...not true to something in real life.
