Any of the Tier 1 computer sellers such as Dell and HP will give you decent solutions for a good price. If you would like to try an alternative, check out ASUS. ASUS is an original design manufacturer, they probably make a large portion of the laptops you see coming from major brandnames. The machines are top notch and the support is the best in the industry.
For a mid-range laptop, I would recommend the F3T or the A8JS. Prices range from 1349-1649. Check out my site at

There are also sub-$1000 notebooks that may suit your purpose if all you plan to do is homework, email, and internet.
You can buy these at my eBay store at http://stores.ebay.com/northbridgemachines or through my website.

This is a tough question and it depends on what you want and what your needs are. Just going with a particular vendor isn't always enough. I have worked on laptops from hp, gateway, dell and toshiba and with every brand they have needed repairs. I will say that of them the dell business division is the best. Their home division is terrible with support. If you went with HP, I would advise going with a pavilion, not a compaq. If you decided to go with dell try to go through the business division and get an xps, otherwise the laptop will be heavy. I too am a student and decided on an hp pavilion dv6000. This particular laptop has been good to me for the past year and has a good not cheap feel to it. I got it decently loaded with an AMD Turion 64 processor, a gig of ram, and a good graphics card, xp pro, for under a grand.

Get a HP or gateway only Toshiba's make the parts for most all of them though. Gateway has the best support (lifetime) and Hp just makes good stuff.

I would highly recommend a Toshiba laptop, specifically a Toshiba Satellite M65-S9092.

Toshiba's are really good! But if you get something else Do not and I repeat do NOT get an HP or A Compact b/c I work on computers and they mess up and break alot! They're cheap but you get what you pay for.

I would go with an hp, Toshiba or a gateway, they are all great computers. I would however stay far away from the dell computers.
