Anyone have any good suggestions to clean hard water and "crusty stuff" off an old 10 gallon tank? I want to clean it up so I can prepare it to once again hold some fish.

Do NOT use CLR or dawn unless you can be more than sure you can clean all of that back off the tank as both are very toxic to your fish. Horrible advice. Vinegar will dissolve most of the hardwater deposits from the tank and scrubbing with salt will also remove some with no harm to the glass or future harm to the fish.

If you have very thick hardwater stains some of it will be etching in addition to the hardwater stains. You can't remove the etching, but it doesn't show as badly when the tank is full either.

I would have to say a good mixture of vinegar and water helps. I use an old electric toothbrush on my tank, it seems to help a lot better than any other scrubby thing.

I think you should use stuff to wash dishes like Dawn. If that turns out to be harmful, then go to Petco or Petsmart and ask someone who works there what cleans tanks.

Try salt. I thought it would kill the fish, but my friend washes all his, with salt, and then rinses it.
