The purpose of sex is enJOYment.
We like it because our higher self lets us know that we are proceeding according to our plan, or in other words that we are going in the correct direction. This is necessary to balance off all the negative thoughts, feelings and emotions we have set free in the past. The end result of our joy is that it helps us to find new desires which helps the universe expand. Even the having of children has this as an ultimate reason.

The pleasure we get during sex is a reward for reproduction. But like everything else, human being have found a way to manipulate nature and warp the means of an act to have no particular end. Like with eating food that has no nutritional value, spending time doing things that have no valuable outcome, or extending ourselves to exist beyond our nature set limits. So in the end, sex is a way that animals use to make more animals. But we have broken the cycle and made the act have no meaning other then to satisfy our need for excess.
That dosen't make what we do wrong or right, it's just the nature of man.

Why?
Why is a cause and effect situation that would generally begin with "because..."
An alternative approach to cognition is to ask when we decided that we like sex. If you were raped in prison, you may not like sex as much. You may have made a different decision. If you were drugged in some way, you may decide that you dislike sex less than what you did before.

the purpose is the continuation of the species.
Why do we like it? Well, it's a lot easier to continue the species when we enjoy doing it. If people hated sex, there would be no people left

We like it because through natural selection, our ancestors who carried the trait of not desiring sex didn't have any and didn't pass that characteristic on. So I think it's safe to say pretty much everyone born now carries the gene of liking sex.

Well other than the reproductive issue it feels good....there are so many nerve endings in those areas that make it feel so damn good why wouldn't you want to have sex? I think if it didn't feel so good there would be a lot less unwanted pregnancies.

For some, reproduction.
For others, selfishness in wanting to provide themselves with the feeling of temporary happiness.
But when you wake up in the morning, do you still think you will be happy?
