Do you celebrate any special birthday traditions with your family? What are they?

My friend is looking to start a tradition for her sons first birthday. Something that will last until he is an adult. Any ideas? (Going to dinner is not a tradition in my book!)

How about a special birthday's scrapbook. She could have different scrapbooks for the different phases of his life: Ages 1-12 (youth), Ages 13-20 (teen), Ages 21+ (adult)

For his youth years she could include an image of his handprint. You know how they paint the hand then put it on a piece of white paper? Include birthday pictures, birthday cards, and pictures of the cake.

She could also place headline news of his birthdays in there, and maybe some sales fliers (I always love to look at how much things cost back in the olden days.) And maybe have a favorite things survey that's updated every year. He's young now, but a survey can be changed and improved upon in time. Survey questions: Favorite animal, best friend, favorite t.v. show, song, movie, food, etc.

So the tradition would be updating the scrapbook... Maybe he could wear his favorite outfit and she can take a picture of him to add to the scrapbook too.

Something I always do with my son is look at pictures and videos of him when he was born, and as he has grown, and we talk about how much fun we were having in the pictures. (Or how wonderful I felt when he was born.)
I used to do this at 11:20am (the time he was born), but now he is always at school at that time. As he gets older and no longer thinks it's cool to sit on the couch with Mom looking at pictures, I'll probably figure out a way to incorporate old pictures in his card or on his wrapping paper or something, so the tradition doesn't totally disappear.

This was always a special time for just me and my son, but it could be a family event too.

At my home the tradition was that on a birthday the one having the birthday got to choose the menu for the meal that evening. (Even Mom got her turn.) My Mom also made a special birthday dessert that was made for that person. My sis always had a coconut cake, I had a special dark chocolate pie, and my brother always had jam cake (go figure) with chocolate icing. Birthdays were really big for us!

One tradition my mother started with me and my husband has continued is waking me up at midnight on the day of my birthday to wish me happy birthday and then we have a birthday breakfast. This worked for me because my birthday is in the summer. But my mother still continues to call me at midnight to wish me happy birthday.
