I'm sure this is a real stupid question. I found out I am going to be a Father. Now I freak out about every little thing because I want to make sure my baby and my wife are safe. We went swimming today and my wife got sunburned pretty bad. Is that okay with her being pregnant? or does it really have nothing to do with it? She is about 13 weeks.

Just put lotion on her sunburn for her as it will help it feel better... As for it hurting the baby, it's an old wives tale that the baby can be effected by the sun... As long as your wife drinks plenty of water and doesn't get dehydrated the baby and your wife will be fine...

Her skin may be more sensitive due to pregnancy which *may* make it easier to burn. She should be sure to treat the burn rather than ignore it because her skin may be more sensitive. Believe of not applying sunscreen after the fact is supposed to help (according to a dermatologist). Or aloe, or any of the usual cures.

Sunshine is actually really good for you when pregnant getting enough sunshine ensures mom and baby have enough vitamin D (which isn't really a vitamin but that's a hole other story). Some studies have linked sun exposure to the baby's future height - just for some fun trivia.

BTW keep bouncing your paranoia off here or other people so you can get a better gauge of what is reasonable and what isn't. Your wife is (probably) pretty hormonal and she needs to feel that you support her rather than nitpick her over every little thing. So it is best to think, research and then if it is a real concern talk to her calmly. I am not saying you have flown off the handle but just as a warning. Sometimes pregnant women don't let on just how much things upset them because they know they are hormonal, that doesn't make it hurt any less though.

Haha and then there was the couple of news stories from my last pregnancy about pregnant women stabbing their husbands for not letting them eat something (one was chocolate). So sometimes apparently pregnant women don't hold it in.

Good luck. Do some research, I am sure you are going to be a great dad.

Also you might want to look into the Bradley Method of Childbirth aka husband coached childbirth. I think it would make childbirth more special for you AND give you the tools so you feel more in control.

BabyCenter.com is a very good resource for all the little questions that seem like they mean nothing. You are not a paranoid as you think. There are several things that seem menial, but tend to be more important than previously suspected. As far as your question goes; I would think that everything should be ok. To be on the safe side though your wife should be very careful about getting overheated. Your blood circulates faster when you are pregnant, causing an increase in your blood pressure. With all that going on and extra heat coming from outside she can easily faint or become dehydrated. This can be relatively harmless or very dangerous depending on the woman and the pregnancy.

It doesn't affect the baby but it's not good for your wife. She needs to be laying on the sunscreen if she's going to be out in the sun. Being pregnant is often uncomfortable enough without adding the sting of a nasty sunburn to it.

She's fine and you are parnoid. But while we are on the subject of the best thing for both go and grab two books from Amazon. com or the books store where ever you buy.

How to raise a healthy child inspite of your doctor and the second book is A Shot in the Dark; vaccinations.

Your wife will be fine get her a big jar of Nozema and teh baby will be fine too. Congradulations! This is the best thing you will ever do in your life!

It wont affect the baby but its going to make her harder to live with lol. Tell her to try lukewarm showers and use aloe vera lotion. If not then use vitamin E cream to help reduce the discomfort. She is also allowed to have Tylenol to reduce the pain associated with the sunburn. And next time tell her to slather on the SPF lol!

She is okay, but she needs to make sure she is hydrated. The sun could have dehydrated her and with burns, it's essential to drink.
