Are you sure you don't care about the price? Good telescopes start at $300 and can exceed $10,000

What do you want to do with the telescope? Do you want to do astrophotography? If so you will need something with a motor drive. Meade and Celestron both have lines of Schmidt Cassegrains that are ideal for this purpose. Do you want a telescope entirely dedicated to viewing planets and star clusters? Then you might want an apochromatic refractor. Takahashi makes high quality apos.
Do you want to do primarily deep space observing without the ability to do astrophotography? Get a large dobsonian. Celestron, and Orion make "small" large dobsonians and JMI and Obsession make giant dobsonians.

Before you buy, first learn more about telescopes.

You can spend anything from about $300 to $10,000 or more on a good telescope, depending on your needs and interests. For most people, a Newtonian reflector on a Dobsonian mount, 6" to 10" in aperture is a good place to start:

Answers like "Meade" or "Celestron" are meaningless, because these companies sell everything from total junk to very fine telescopes, and a beginner has no way of telling one from the other. One reason I often recommend Orion is that very few of the scopes they sell are really junk, though you pretty much get what you pay for.
