Airport Schwechat is outside of Vienna. Before you go sightseeing make sure you know exactly when you should be back for boarding.
The City-Airport-Train (CAT) runs twice an hour and takes between 15 and 20 minutes to reach the station "Wien Mitte" where you can start your sight seeing.
Or you can take the S-Bahn (S7) buy a 24-hour ticket and start seeing Vienna immediately :-).
Allow for ample time to get back to the airport and include the time you will need to walk to your gate into your schedule. Airport Schwechat is known to be very punctual.
With less than 8 hours time I suggest to mostly stroll in the "1. Bezirk", enjoy one of the coffee houses - Cafe Hawelka, Cafe Sacher, Cafe Demel are all fabulous - and do major window shopping or sight seeing with "Hofburg", "Stefansdom", and "Karlskirche", and many other churches of different architecture. Depending on your actual schedule you might want to visit one of the many museums or a theater or opera - for the latter ones you most probably will have to go with "Stehplatz" which means you will be standing; but you most probably will get a ticket for nearly any production the same day.

Too bad it's only 8 hours, Vienna is one of the great cities of Europe. I would have made plans to stay a few days, but then that is just me.
Make sure you visit the Imperial Hapsburg Palace, the Albertina Museum (one of the riches collections in the world), and the St. Charles Church (the best in the country).

Catch one of the operattas in one of the old theaters. Catch the Waltzers in the City Park (they may ask you to dance). The carriage rides are wonderful and a meal at an outside cafe is delightful. A vist to Shoenbrunn Castle is a great experience or a short cruise on the Danube. Just suggestions, know you cannot do them all in 8 hours.
