Research has been done with rats, in which one group of rats was placed in a tank filled with an opaque liquid in which there was a submerged island. These rats swam around and eventually found the island and climbed on to it and sat there. Another group of rats was placed in a tank filled with opaque liquid with no submerged islands. They swam until they could not swim any longer and just as their nose was about to dip under for the last time they were scooped out by the researchers.

Later on, all the rats were placed in a tank with no submerged island. The rats that were in the group that found an island the first time, swam for twice as long before 'giving up' than the rats who found no island the first time.

The conclusion is that rats who have hope or who are optimistic (because of previous positive experiences) will try twice as long before giving up.

The connection to luck... luck determined which group the rats were placed in for the first trial. But interestingly, they allowed it to determine how they behaved in the second trial. If luck is random and out of our control, then it absolutely should not be allowed to affect our behavior.

You can't argue that there is no such thing as good luck. How else to explain finding a $20 bill on the street or avoiding a car accident because you overslept? And bad lack happens the same way, randomly.

But in general, I would say that what many people attribute to good luck is actually being able to see an opportunity and take advantage of it. Luck is a combination of factors that all coincide to create a positive (or negative) outcome.

I've heard people say to someone "you just had bad luck", but often it wasn't luck, but the person's inability to change a situation for the better. And sometimes it really is just bad luck.

If by "luck" you mean, a higher probability of favorable outcomes in given situations with no rational explanation or cause; yes, I do believe in luck. Some people just get lucky, for no reason. However, I do not believe that chants, meditations, prayers, superstitious rituals, silly charms or trinkets have any influence whatsoever on a person's likelihood of being "lucky". If they DID, it would not be luck at all, but rather cause and effect -- the trinkets or rituals themselves would be causing the positive outcomes. Luck only comes into play when the odds or probabilities are unaffected by external factors. There is no rational explanation for what luck IS, or why some people appear to be luckier than others. It is what it is. No point in analyzing that which you cannot prove or disprove.

I believe "luck" is just a term which describes favorable outcomes.
Mathematics and probability will always win out over luck - that's why gambling casinos are always the biggest winners - they're not lucky, they're simply on the plus side of the odds.

Every individual is born with certain luck. Some stupids are more successful than the competent and hard working people on account of goos luck.
