Coco puff- I knew Hendrix was a given and he would come up but you have to give Richrath credit on his talent too.

Roger McGuinn, founder of The Byrds. Most rock stars consider him a bonafide genius, able to make a 12-string Rickenbacker sound like a jazz ensemble or a full orchestra.
He was an enormous--though often unheralded--influence on Tom Petty, and later on much of '80s rock. Can't count how many times I'll spin an obscure Byrds track from the '60s and have someone comment that it sounds like it MUST have influenced some '80s or '90s band.
The guitar solo on "Eight Miles High" is jaw-dropping. Every note has its purpose and adds to the performance. In the early to mid '70s, some of the "guitar heroes" mentioned here seemed to mistake fast and furious technique with artistry.

Prince.
Prince is well known for being able to play many instruments and there is no doubt within the music industry that he is one the worlds leading guitarists. Prince taught himself to play by the age of 13 and by 16 was able to play Santana note for note. When he hit the mainstream with his first album at the age of 20 he was already being compared to the likes of Hendrix. And he still had a long way to go.

Stevie Ray Vaughn - Hands down, ask BB King, Eric Clapton, they have said it. The first time I saw him play in the Beacon Theater in NY was one of the most amazing experiences of my life. I have seen many of the greats, but Stevie blows them all away.
then
Johnny Winter or Eddie Van Halen, Buddy Guy, Albert King, Freddie King....
Also, Listen to Stevie's version of Hendrix's Little Wing, most amazing guitar playing, he makes love to the guitar and every note is brilliant.
