Exciting choice for you. I don't think anyone can give you a good answer to your dilemma.
I question what's your mission? Do you have dreams of opening a resturant that doesn't exist. Something hip and on the cutting edge. If yes, a franchise would not be the option.
Is it more cost effective to buy into a franchise? There are many benefits to a franchise, but sometimes can be expensive and very restrictive rules.
Regardless of your choice there both huge commitments. So in scheme of things, "What Makes You Happy?"

I know that if you have a franchise you share your profits with whatever restaurannt you are planning on. You also do need some knowledge of how to manage it. You also need money to start for both (duh). The good thing about a franchise is that maybe its a popular franchise and you could get more profit . The downside is that you dont really decide the design and other things and have to go by the their rules unless is your own restaurant franchise. A small restaurant would also be good but smalls ones are overshadowed by big franchises. Unless the food is good. I would probably go with a small restaurant for now gain some knowledge and have the freedom of having more control of my small restaurant. Both are good but I would decide a small one for now. Good luck.

A 3rd choice is to buy an existing restaurant (not a franchise).
