I agree... I hate labels too, and consider people who call themselves emo "posers", but yeah I guess I'm emo.
I listen to cursive, death cab for cutie, funeral for a friend, hawthorne heights, the get up kids, coheed and cambria, rainer maria, something corporate, sunny day real estate, texas is the reason, probably most bands most people have never heard of. I try and shy away from over-exposed bands that get too much attention from the media and who-in my opinion- have gotten too big to stay true to their emo roots, like dashboard confessional, my chemical romance, red jumpsuit apparatus, etc.
I have what you'd call "emo hair", sideswept fringe bangs covering one eye and a lot of that half of my face, the rest of my hair is long (shoulder length) and pretty razored/texturized. I just wear it cause I like it. Besides, the bangs are fun to flip out of my eyes, and they're mysterious. I like to write poetry and songs, play the guitar, hang out at starbucks, go to shows, and of course I think emo guys are hott (who doesn't?).
To all the stereotypers out there, not all emos are cutters. This is a big misconception. I do cut sometimes, but not very often at all. Cutting yourself doesn't make you emo. Really, nothing "makes" you emo. Its how you feel. I don't wear all black OR skinny jeans. My typical outfit is a ribbed tank top in a cute color with jeans or capris with converse and lots of happy colored bracelets. So my outfits aren't very stereotypical of an emo. I hate stereotypes too.
But I guess the main reason people consider me emo is because i'm quiet and reserved, and very emotional, and i'm not afraid to express those emotions. Yeah, I cry easily, either from hearing a song that moves me to tears or hits me because it relays exactly how I feel inside at the moment, or when I'm sympathizing with a friend who's sad, or when I feel insecure, lonely or depressed, but what a lot of people don't get is that emo people aren't just sad and depressed all the time. We are people too, so of course we are happy. I love to laugh, love to hold hands with my boyfriend, I really do love life. We are just as expressive in the joyous times as in the dark, bleak times of life. I'm not accusing you of being a poser, but I like to remind fellow emos of that fact, because some of us do get caught up in a label, and try to live letting that label dictate who we are. So don't be afraid to smile every once in a while, even if its with tears in your eyes.
Its hard to find other emos out there who aren't just emo because they think its "in". We should talk sometime. Do you write poetry too?

"The word Emo has survived and flourished in three decades, two millenniums, and two Bush administrations. It's older than four baseball teams, six basketball teams, four football teams, and two soccer leagues. It's older than five former Yugoslav republics, the last seven national spelling champions, and Avril Lavigne. It's older than most of its fans.
It's been a source of pride, a target of derision, a mark of confusion, and a sign of the times.
It's been the next big thing twice, the current big thing once, and so totally over millions of times.
And yet, not only can no one agree on what it means, there is not now, nor has there ever been, a single major band that admits to being emo. Not one.
That's pretty impressive. And contentious. And ridiculous. Good thing too--because so is emo.
Emo is short for emotional. But isn't all music emotional? Well, yes, or at least it should be. Originally, emo was short for "emocore," a strain of hardcore punk that was notable for its obsession with feelings (as opposed to politics, anger, and smashing stuff up). Then it started to be applied to bands that weren't punk, to fashion trends, to sad-eyed kids in the back of class. It's always been mildly derisive, a term used by haters and critics to dismiss something that's overly weepy, self-indulgent, or unironic. Every generation that loves emo bands simultaneously rejects the term while claiming owership of it--meaning even if they won't admit they love emo, they certainly will say how much they hate everything that's been called emo since them. But still, no one knows what it is."

EMO IS USED TO DESCRIBE MUSIC.
NOT PEOPLE.
you're the kind of person that keeps lables going.
stop getting caught up in a stupid little trend just to be cool.
it's pretentious and ridiculous and it really needs to stop.
and anyhow, haven't you heard?
being scene is the cool new thing.
emo is so old news.

If you hate using labels and being labeled, then why be a part of a social scene where the people all look the same, dress the same, prodominantly listen to the same music. "I'm so different, just like them". I have nothing really against the music, but i hate the idea how emos think that by all dressing and acting the same theyre different. Just another corporate scene, your being milked by the media and u don't even realise it.

It's okay, I am going to have to say it too. I am not emo, but I have no problem with anyone who is emo. I have a problem with emo posers and posers of any other group for that matter. P.S. I prefer Frank Iero and Mikey Way, but Gerard is also very attractive and a great person overall!

What exactly is "EMO"? I hear people say it all the time, but I've never known the actual definition.
