Any of the above could be possibilities for your fish if what you're asking about is a freshwater aquaium fish. Here are some photos so you can see what these look like: http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/scateg.cfm?pCatId=888 - red tailed shark and rainbow shark
http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/scateg.cfm?pCatId=837 - plecos
http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/scateg.cfm?pCatId=1162 - otocinclus

If the fish you're asking about is a native species, it might be a redhorse (several species, adults over 6"): http://www.npwrc.usgs.gov/resource/fish/ndfishes/gifs/redhorse.jpg or a blacknose or longnose dace in spawning colors (minnow-sized): http://www.kansasfishes.com/images/fish/blacknosedace.jpg , http://www.maine.gov/ifw/fishing/fishidentification/longnosedace.jpg

It probly has a grey/black body if it's just the back fin that's red it's a "red tailed shark" if it's top fin is also red it's called a "rainbow shark"

both of these fish need to be kept with out any more of it's kind but can be housed in a community tank
