The Lord of the Rings Trilogy is one of the closest adaptations that I have ever seen. They stay true to the books with just a few differences. These may have been added in the extended versions, but I have not seen them yet.

The Stand, written by Stephen King. There are a few differences between book and movie, but King had a hand in the movie so it's pretty close.

It's also a great book/movie.

Most movies are simply based on books, liberties are taken with the story and the dialogue But in The Lord of the Rings trilogy much of the dialogue was taken straight from the books
